Messi: "He would be remembered for his goal against Nigeria" - Ferdinand

Former England and Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand says the only memory fans would have of Argentina star Lionel Messi at the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup is his goal against Nigeria in the group stage.

Ferdinand stated this while reflecting on the unimpressive performances of Messi and Portuguese captain Cristiano Ronaldo who were both eliminated on Saturday in the round of 16 at this year’s tournament.

Messi and Argentina crashed out after losing 4-3 to a Kylian Mbappe-inspired France team, while Ronaldo’s Portugal were eliminated 2-1 by Uruguay thanks to Edinson Cavani brace.
Ferdinand posited that the exit of Messi and Ronaldo, who scored four of Portugal’s six goals in Russia, proves that football is all about team performance and not just individual brilliance.

“The 2 Greats have departed the #worldcup at the same stage on the same day… Ronaldo will be remembered at this World Cup for his hattrick against one of the favourites Spain.. Messi for his one moment of brilliance against Nigeria! Just proves football is a TEAM game!” Ferdinand wrote on his verified Twitter handle.
